What do you do to improve your Go skills?

How do you train yourself?
I have found that replaying pro games helps me a lot, so I mostly do that.
I feel that it is good for my opening, midgame and shapes. I also do some problmes to strengthen my reading ability.
What about you?

I replay the professional go

I replay the professional go records too. I learn a lot from this also.
Playing go game on the internet is popular in China, even professional players are doing it. But I don't do that, mostly because of my lack of confidence.

Playing is the most

Playing is the most important part I think.
Then life & death problems is a must to improve tactical skills and gain conficence.
And, of course, looking at what do those that know how to play teaches a lot.
Finally, if you can have your games reviewed by someone stronger to point out the mistakes it speeds things up.

I improve my Go by replaying

I improve my Go by replaying and reviewing pro games from Go4Go. I commented more than 1200 high level games since 2003 and is sure that this work helps me a lot.

I read a few books, and go

I read a few books, and go through professional games. I would love to play stronger players, but the only players in the town where I live are ones I introduced to the game. The nearest club is a 2 hour drive away. I usually can't spare 6 to 7 hours on a week night ( 2 there, 2 back, and the playing for 2 to 3). Where can you play against people on the internet?

Reading is the most

Reading is the most important skill. If you can read better than your opponent, you can play more aggressively and fight your way to a successful conclusion. If you are being outread by your opponent, then you will lose point/advantage in each exchange. You may have a good opening, but by the end of the middle game, you are behind.

Skill in reading and fighthing will support your opening skills and allow you to increase your advantage through the middle game.

For most amateurs, its not who makes the best moves that wins, rather its the person that makes the last big mistake loses.

1. everyday solve problems of two types, easy ones that you can solve fast, and hard ones that require you to work. On any given day, if you have time for one type only, do the easy ones. Graded Go Problems for Beginners and Gokyo Shumyo are two great collections for this purpose.

2. always ask yourself several questions before you play each stone: urgent play needed? if not, big point available? if not, push back a border or create some aji.

3. count the game after each sequence. When you are ahead: eliminate aji, simplify and wrap up the game fast. When you are behind complicate, touch, force, struggle, help your opponent to make that last big mistake.

I review professional games,

I review professional games, and solve tsume-go. I also replay my own games, and try to figure out what went wrong. I always review games with my opponents, and also play teaching games with more experienced players.
